It took three tries to beat the Virgin River.

The first time, fifteen families came to a stretch of river bottom called Mesquite Flats, dug six miles of irrigation canal, and started farming. Then came June 1882: afternoon thunderstorms sent the Virgin River through that canal in fifty places, and the river won.

Dudley Leavitt and his family tried again in 1887. They lasted four years before the desert ran them off too. In 1894, six young families came over from Bunkerville, rebuilt the canal, and planted cotton, grapes, alfalfa and wheat. That time it stuck. By 1898 the name had been cut down to just Mesquite.

The farm town became a city in 1984, and today it's casino resorts, year-round golf and a big retirement community, sitting on the Arizona line 80 miles up I-15 from Las Vegas. Under all of it is the same stubborn streak that got the canal dug a third time. This wall is for the people who still have it.
